It always sneaks up on me, so I wanted to give you a little warning:
Earth Day is tomorrow - celebrate everyone's Mother's day by being good to mother earth!
Go get some Lubbock-tolerant plants and help support the people who work so hard to keep us green!
May you choose to live cleaner, regardless of what your neighbors think!

A Little Green List for St. Pat's 2016
Nothing native here grows without thorns
You have to know that the Mesquite Hugger staff loves any day where going green is a requirement (if you want to avoid the dreaded pinch.)
St. Patrick wants you - to go green!
In honour of the patron saint of Ireland, why not pick one green step to make before the wekend ends?
- Replace one car trip with a walk, a bike ride, or (at the very least) a car pool.
- Recycle or upcycle something headed for the trash.
- Replace an incandescent bulb with an LED.
- Take a reusable cup when you go to a place that serves in disposable cups.
- Build a rain barrel
- Build a composter
- Hang a load of clothes up to dry
- Plan for Earth Day
- Test drive an electric car
- Avoid meat for a day or (at least) a meal
- Go a day without buying anything
- Turn off the TV/computer/cell phone and do one productive thing in that time
- Pick your own green thing to do!
Everyone can use a little St. Patty humour!
May the luck of the Irish be yours when it comes to healthier choices!
PS - Let us know what you picked!

More Save the World Resolution Denial
I sat down with my journal today to make a list of my "causes". I have come to realize that my causes have me overwhelmed a
wildlife conservation
growing renewable/clean energy
reducing carbon release (petroleum and coal)
reducing hunger
reducing class disparity
reducing homelessness/serving those who are down
reducing gun violence
It's different when you see it as a list. It's different when you realize how closely related they all are.
I was a member`of the Horned Lizard Conservation Society for a while. It is a great organization with a very small focus. I love their mission, but the more I looked the more I realized that the cure for their little picture was a big picture change. If you specifically want to save horned lizards (that's a "horny toad" for you locals) you need to reduce petroleum-based pollution and and farming/sprawl-based environmental destruction. You also need to eradicate the feral cat population that we have so lovingly fostered. Big picture changes are needed to save these iconic lizards that have a very specialized diet (red ants) and are very slow and easy to catch. Yep, it's overwhelming, especially when cats are phenomenally successful hunters and chemical companies (like Monsanto) have a more powerful voice than our general populace.
What does it all mean?
I don't know, but here is where I hope to focus my efforts:
I will stop supporting retailers who sell guns. (Academy Sporting Goods, I will miss you.)
I will ride a bike more and do all I can to avoid carbon release in all forms.
I will educate myself and vote more responsibly for those who believe this world is in need of and worth saving.
I will educate myself and vote more responsibly for those who believe human beings are more important than corporate profits.
I will step up my own organic gardening and and support others who try to do the same.
Hunger, homelessness, and disparity - I need to find a better focus.
May you know your causes and may you work for what you believe.

Arbor Day Post #4
You may remember from three previous posts (linked below) that my friend Jennifer gave me a handful of tiny trees from the Arbor Day Foundation. She received twelve trees, kept three for herself, and passed nine on to me. I am happy to report that we now have 5 total that are sprouting leaves and seem to be thriving. Jennifer has two crepe myrtles growing, and I have the three in the photo above.
In case you missed the whole saga or want to know a little more about the Arbor Foundation and reasons to plant trees, here are links to the first three posts:
The First Arbor Day Post
The Second Arbor Day Post
The Real Arbor Day Post
May you have life abundantly!
PS. Thank you, Jennifer!

Happy Arbor Day
The white flowering dogwood from the Arbor Day Foundation is putting out a tiny leaf this morning. The crabapple is exploding with leaves. They seem to like the water from the rain barrel.
We saw Robert Pinsky and Laurence Hobgood performing PoemJazz last night and had supper at a Relay for Life fundraiser at Georgio's Pizza (great and local!) I rode the bike this morning to Yellowhouse Coffee.
Orange is more than hope now.
I am an eco-cliche today, and it is a great day so far.
May you enjoy whatever and wherever you are today!

A (Very) Little Bit More Arbor Day and a Lubbock Local Business
Purple means Crabapple! Orange and Blue mean Snagit, I hope leaves pop out!
Since I posted yesterday about Arbor Day, I went home and snapped a pic of the tiny tree that is sporting leaves. Woohoo!
In the mail yesterday came a flyer from Mountain Hideaway, a great locally-owned business that promotes conservation and looking really good in the wilderness - even if the wilderness is the urban jungle. Well, it turns out that they are having a big sale on Arbor Day weekend and they are giving out free Arbor Day t-shirts and are having sign-ups to win a free tree! Be sure to tell them the Mesquite Hugger sent you!
May you get free stuff AND plant a tree or thirty!
