A Valentine's Present from Germany: Smart to be all-electric

[After the massive disappointment of seeing Ford's Mark Fields' campaign to weasel out of fuel economy standards, it was really nice to see a car company make a move in the world-saving direction this week.]

Honey, it may be time for new Mesquite Hugger Logo!

The headline from John Voelcker over at Green Car Reports reads Smart to be all-electric in U.S. and Canada; gasoline goes away this fall

Woohoo!

So, here is my open letter to Daimler, Smart's parent company:

Bravo! Genial! Ihr Leute schaukelt! Über Nacht bin ich ein Smart Fan geworden! Vielen Dank!
(Bravo! Awesome! You people rock! Overnight, I have become a Smart fan! Thank you!)

Now, I have a few requests: [Kannst du diesen verrückten Amerikanern glauben, immer etwas mehr? Oy vey!]

Please bring back the Smart Roadster (Electric):

Mid-life crises need more eco-friendly choices!

Please send us the Smart ForFour (Electric):

Why should single people have all the fun?

Please build us the Smart Crosstown (Electric):

It could be the coolest electric car ever! Ever!

Please build ME the Smart Truck (Electric):

(Here and Here, respectively)

This one is a desperate plea - I need an eco-friendly way to haul recycling and bicycling and upcycling. Please!!! (Please beat Carlos Ghosn to the punch on this one!)

The old Dodge just ain't doing the eco-friendly trick!

Daimler, thank you!

May we see this kind of good news and corporate responsibility become more and more common!

PS. Carlos, I still love you, man, but some major car builder needs to offer us a fully electric truck!

Fossil Free Friday: Tiny Truck, Blue Pony, Hayhoe Talks Texas

Ebay offered up a couple of cool electric oddballs this week:

I love this thing - a 1965 Mustang that is fully electric! If you're gonna drive electric, this is one sweet ride to do it in! This one is in Simi Valley, California.

On the more bare-bones side of things is this sweet little electric pickup that is titled as a truck - not a neighborhood vehicle - in Ohio. It's not quite my dream electric truck, but I'd definitely drive it, use it, and enjoy it! (Nissan, why no electric pickup? Carlos Ghosn, we need you on this one!)

Dr. H talks Texas Energy (Carbon and Renewable) on the latest episode of GW

If you've not yet caught it, check this one out! This is the third video in the Global Weirding series. They are short videos produced here in Lubbock in association with KTTZ and producer Jonathan Seaborn (who had a booth at the recent Get Your Green Up event at the TTU Museum). A new video is being released every other Wednesday. These definitely get the Mesquite Hugger two thorns up!

May y'all find a greener way to get around - even if you live in Texas!

PS. If you're running to Ohio to pick up the little truck, will you please pick up this little beauty (also on EBay)? Mesquite Hugger is needing a new company car and this one would fit right in  - I already have the t-shirt!

The Mesquite Hugger 2016 Christmas wishlist: Citicar!

I haven't really wanted much stuff for Christmas - the Radwagon does not count, does it? - but that all changed today.

It's no secret that I am a fan of electric cars. It's no secret that I like quirky things, vintage things, and occasionally things that other people think are really ugly. Which leads me to the little Floridian electric supercar - well, it was an electric supercar until that Tesla car came along.

(Learn more here: Vintage Electric Car Profile: the almighty Sebring Vanguard Citicar! )

So there I was, stupidly inviting temptation by hopping on Ebay and typing "electric car" when I saw it: my favorite blue, very reasonably priced, mostly restored, nicely upgraded, and only one state over.

Isn't she love(ug)ly?

What a beautiful face (with an ugly bumper)

I saw an article today where Carlos Ghosn (head cheese #1 at Nissan) said now is the time to go electric if we want to avoid global climate catastrophe. Carlos, I hear you, man!

Now where was that grant application for buying a vintage EV one state over? Where is that anonymous wealthy benefactor Charles Dickens was telling me about the other day? Carlos, Elon, Lewellyn, Leno, hook a blogger up!

May your green dreams be as much fun as mine and maybe a little less love(ug)ly!

Happy holidays!
